Payment Processors: How did you perform on Black Friday?
2018 has been a mixed year for the payment processing industry. Despite significant growth, major mergers, and the introduction of new players, the headlines have been filled with outages that have left consumers raging. Visa looked to have stolen the show in June with a Europe wide outage but was quickly outdone by Mastercard in July. But these behemoths were by no means alone. Fintech’s Starling Bank and Patreon also got hit hard. And so has customer confidence. Having the ability to forecast where and when networks are under strain enables payment processors to flag network pressures to their merchants. DR plans can be invoked with little interruption to the consumer. SLA’s continue to be met, with no financial penalty between processor and merchant. RTLX is the cost-effective, real-time management framework for Monitoring, Tracking, Alerting and Querying the transaction flow across your payments platforms. RTLX simultaneously monitors the health of the underlying infrastructure for components such as subsystems, networks, databases, processes, events. https://www.insidertech.co.uk/solutions/payment-tracking
Transformation of proven applications as a Journey
At the recent NonStop Technical Bootcamp in San Francisco, there were many presentations and sessions on the transformation of system environments including mission-critical legacy applications. Bob Kiep, Chief Architect at Gallagher Bassett, a Third Party Insurance Claims Administrator, held one of the customer presentations.
Bob spoke about the transformation of Gallagher Bassett’s core application, which resides on NonStop and went live back in the late 1980’s. He explained how they kept the mission-critical, core functionality and business intelligence on NonStop but opened up the application to call centers using APIs and cloud technology.
The key takeaway from Bob’s presentation is that legacy applications can be modernized best in small steps, keeping the project risk low while protecting the investment in functionality that is the backbone of your business.
In Gallagher Bassett’s case, the transformation journey started about 5 years ago with a make-over of the green-screen GUI providing Gallagher Bassett’s user with an intuitive, easy-to-use interface thereby simplifying user training and decreasing the number of user errors.
Later on, Gallagher Bassett successfully implemented comforte’s middleware solution to allow access to the core application from other platforms, before adding web services and APIs in order to support new business requirements.
comforte offers a number of software products to help organizations transform their legacy applications from the outside in. From the GUI layer, to middleware, to database and data protection.

Take the ITUGLIB Survey Today!
Take the Survey
Sadly, your support team at ITUGLIB is at the point that our beloved NS 2000 (‘HPITUG’) is at the end of its support life. We have been working with HPE to understand how they might be able to help, but it seems certain we won’t be able to solve the problem the same way we did nine years ago with a generous donation of hardware. We are currently looking at all of our options, which include the possibility of a TNS-V solution.
Because of this, and to continue to provide services you want and need, we’ve opened an Online Survey on Connect’s website. Since ITUGLIB is a service provided by members, for members, we want to know some key things such as what you depend on, how you access it, and what your future needs are.
When you have a few minutes over the next couple of days, please take the survey. We estimate it should take less than 15 minutes of your time.
We will be paying very close attention to the results of this survey to help us make sure that whatever choices we make, they’re done with our membership’s needs in mind. Please take a few minutes to take the survey for us!

2018 was another troubling year in the cybersecurity world. We saw a repeat of last year’s data breaches on a larger scale. Google, Toyota, Facebook, Under Armour, LifeLock, Air Canada, Blue Cross and many, many more fell victim to some sort of compromise. Hardly a week went by where we weren’t reading about a new mega breach. Even the popular online video game, Fortnite, was hacked and childrens’ personal data was found for sale on the dark web. No one was off limits. It’s to the point where we’ve become numb to the news; we shrug it off and move on. But as consumers, we should be concerned with the lackluster cybersecurity practices companies have in place. It’s clearly not protecting our data.
Companies spend billions on security each year, yet why is this still an issue? It’s almost 2019 and still most applications are horribly insecure, and security best practices are not followed. Applications are designed for functionality, not security because security is seen as difficult and time-consuming, often blamed for adding delays to product launches and revenue generating activities.
