The San Francisco Bay Connect Chapter invites you to join us for our second meeting. We've heard feedback from the attendees that we want hard technical information and education or training, and we've got both for you this time. This is serious computing information for professionals who are serious about their computing.

Seminar Description:
The design and implementation of highly available mission-critical systems requires a more disciplined approach than is common in the IT industry. It is important to have a sound understanding of the technology as well as the ability to communicate effectively and see the project through to successful completion.
The rapid pace of change and the wide range of available technologies make it increasingly important to have a good understanding of the underlying principles and a clear view of how to apply systems to solve business issues. System designers need to understand both the application and the behaviour of their target systems and surrounding infrastructure in order to create applications that are reliable, which have minimal performance impact and which scale well in a production environment.
The seminar will discuss the factors governing systems availability and performance, complemented by real-life examples of the design and implementation of all aspects of a system from hardware and infrastructure to application software."
Seminar Leader Biography:
Colin Butcher is an international consulting engineer who specializes in the design and implementation of mission-critical and disaster-tolerant systems. He has an engineering background, which gives him a thorough understanding of the importance of the usability and reliability aspects of computer systems and data networks. He specializes in leading major projects, providing authoritative technical advice and project direction based on a sound understanding of both business requirements and complex technical issues.
He has been responsible for the architectural design, implementation and management of several major projects, including satellite control, air traffic monitoring, finance data and healthcare infrastructures.
