Bill began his relationship with Connect in 1988 when he began volunteering as an associate editor of the old ITUGLIB newsletter (today known simply as The Connection). That same year, he joined the board as a regional representative, and remained on the board until 1997, including a year as President in 1996. Other accolades include two years as the Editor in Chief, ITUG's Treasurer for 2 years, and was elected to the then-3-year post of Vice President - President - Past President.
In 1990, ITUGLIB's sponsor (the Colorado Health Science center) was in the process of retiring it's last Tandems. Bill convinced his company that they could easily use their own Tandems and host ITUGLIB (which at the time was distributed by reel-to-reel tape!). In 1998, they were able to put the library On-Line and make it available to download free to all members. In 2000, the NonStop division approached ITUG and asked if they would host the open-source migrations they had done. The agreement was accepted with only one stipulation – the content would be freely available to all who wanted to download it. This helped modernize ITUGLIB and gave it new life.
Earlier this year, when the Connect board severed its ties with the old management company, the old ITUG web site (and along with it ITUGLIB) was taken offline. Bill and his team managed to obtain some Database backup tapes... and convinced HP that it would be great press to host ITUGLIB and other Connect-related activities on a NonStop server using open systems such as Java and PHP. Later this week a NS-2000 will be installed and they will start porting the library and bringing it online; they should have a rudimentary site up later this month with a lot of plans to utilize this platform to bring more content to Connect members.
