Magnetic tape makes a comebackMagnetic tape storage is not dead. Introduced in 1951 in Univac computers, magnetic tape lost its luster with the advent of high-capacity hard disks and cloud storage. However, in 2012, the extraordinary volume of data created by a variety of mobile devices and sensors increased the demand for an economical, efficient way to archive everything. Magnetic tape filled that need. Today, a single cartridge can hold 185 terabytes of data

Tomorrow’s retail today: Boost productivity, build value
Constant connectivity and a multi-screen world have redefined how people shop. Consumers tend to move between brick-and-mortar stores, smartphones and tablets, and a purchase can occur through any channel at any time. Shoppers aren’t simply “showrooming”—browsing in stores and then going online to hunt down the lowest-cost option. They’re also “webrooming”— researching online and buying in stores.

Some BIG happenings at NSU40
- Video: “The Story of NonStop” is live and available to view! (https://www.nsu40.com/forum/general-discussion/video-the-story-of-nonstop) For those that remember, this was something that was requested by the group from the very first NSU40 meeting, and with sponsor support, we were able to make it happen. This is also something the group has mentioned they would like to see more of in terms of marketing and education. Please take a few minutes to watch the video and provide feedback in the comments. I’d like to give a special shout out to our sponsors on this video; ComForte, TCM, Idelji, and XYPRO.

HPE Shadowbase Software Improves Support for DB2 as a Source
Gravic recently dramatically improved the support of HPE Shadowbase for DB2 as a source in data replication environments. With this new release, HPE Shadowbase software makes it easy and cost effective to integrate your DB2 databases into the rest of your data processing environments. HPE Shadowbase data replication can now replicate from DB2 on any IBM platform/environment to any of the supported HPE Shadowbase targets, including HPE NonStop, Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, MySQL, and Sybase. This release also includes replicating DB2 data into non-traditional non-database targets, such as replicating DB2 change data into MQ series, JMS, fraud detection systems, flat-files, real-time business intelligence solutions, and other messaging targets. This latest build includes DB2 databases resident on z/OS IBM mainframe environments, as well as DB2 on AIX, Linux, Windows, etc. Read the new HPE Shadowbase solution brief, or contact your local HPE account team or SBsales@gravic.com for more information.
Big Data – Big Risk? How your NonStop can help tackle a Big Challenge with Tokenization
Big Data projects these days are all about Hadoop, advanced analytics, new architecture concepts and have nothing to do with NonStop. Or do they? Chances are that your NonStop is already contributing to your organization’s strategic Big Data initiatives. comForte is presenting on this very topic at TBC 2017 (#NonStopTBC). You will hear about use cases from NonStop customers that directly intersect with Big Data. You will see examples of how NonStop-based data tokenization plays an essential role in securing sensitive data in such scenarios without impeding big data analytics. Don’t miss this session if you want to learn how your NonStop is going to enable secure analysis in the big data world.

TANDsoft Adds Data Masking to its Sensitive Data Intercept (SDI) Solution
Your name is John Doe. Your nine-digit U.S. Social Security Number (SSN) is 123-45-6789. You earn an annual salary of USD $93,000, and your employer maintains all your sensitive personal information as unprotected data in the company database. Perhaps your employer should mask that data via TANDsoft’s Sensitive Data Intercept (SDI). A new feature add-on to TANDsoft’s popular SDI solution, data masking protects sensitive data from individuals or groups not authorized to access it. With SDI, masked data retains its original format (SSN = 123-45-6789); yet it is altered in such a way as to make unauthorized detection impossible (SSN = XXX-XX-X789). Without SDI’s data masking, a security hole can represent an access point for a disastrous data breach.
NonStop Under 40 – Operation Support – Part 1
Part 1 – Grooming the Next Generation
There are good news and bad news in the world of NonStop Operation support.
First the good news: NonStop operation support teams have always been known to be one of the most technical and versatile groups in any enterprise environment. The team embodies a wealth of technical knowledge that is just as critical in ensuring the fault tolerance of the applications as the underlying NonStop hardware and Guardian operating system. They can diagnose and fix issues ranging from hardware, system software, application scheduling, database, network and others.
Now the bad news: Many members of that superb NonStop technical team are either retiring or looking to retire soon. What are you going to do to replace that talent pool? Is there a way to bring in new and younger resources to support your NonStop systems and applications to ensure it will continue to run smoothly?
I believe the answer is: “Yes.” But it requires a new set of considerations.
